Samsung NC10 - Tested when launched with O2.. Here is the review.. The latest to challenge the ASUS Eee PC

The arrival of O2 to the laptop market meant only good news for us consumers. With a tendancy to seek out quality partners to work with, O2 have come up trumps teaming up with Samsung, and with the NC10, they may be onto a winner

Trying to rival the competition, specifically Orange who until this point, you could argue had the best notebook available, Samsung has taken the best bits of the MSI Wind Laptop and ASUS Eee PC 1000 and produced its own take on the 10.2-inch netbook.

On first appearances it's a bit of a spot the difference between the NC10 and the MSI Wind. The NC10, weighing 1.3kg, means it's a portable and the use of solid plastic means it feels great in the hand. Sporting a matt finish and a slightly rough texture its looks are something you'll either love or loathe but we have yet to find anyone in the office who doesn’t like it. Battery life is an amazing five hours in standard mode, and if you make some adjustments to the settings, you'll easily get up to an extra hour.

Measuring in at 260 x 170 x 30mm at its thinnest point; The addition of a protruding 6-cell battery at the back does add about 5mm to the overall depth. Due to this, when on your lap it does mess about with the centre of gravity of the device, but when on a table you'll find it raises the screen a little, making the whole thing a little more ergonomic.

Open the lid and you'll find a stunning 10.2-inch backlit LED screen. Sure, its got the standard 1024 x 600-pixel resolution other netbooks have. With the NC10 though, even when you crank it down low, to save battery life, it'll prove more usable than most.

You could think that cramped and awkward keyboards are par for the course for netbooks but we've found the NC10 not to suffer from this. Samsung has managed to pack more keys into the same space, the result being a smooth keyboard to use even though it's not full size. Samsung hasn't even sacrificed the secondary keys, so you won't feel as though you're buying a compromised laptop.

When it comes to specification, you'll find the NC10 is very much a netbook, packing in an Intel Atom N270 processor and 1024MB of memory. The NC10 is packed to deliver great performance for whats its designed for, and with the 160GB hard drive as well, we have to say that in our tests, it worked a treat. The hard drive is also partitioned into two equally sized portions.

Packing Windows XP, you can use it straight from the box without having to get the grips with any new technology. What's more, we found it loaded smoothly and quickly, booting to use in just 26 seconds.

Performance was more than acceptable, with the NC10 allowing you to run basic Office tasks with relative ease. You won't want to run anything too taxing on this kind of laptop but as a second machine for use out and about, or around the house, it's more than adequate for surfing the net and writing Word documents. This is something O2 are clear on, and if you want something that will be running multiple applications for long times of the day, you should consider the other O2 Samung Laptops on offer

Features are the usual, comprising of three USB ports - one on the right hand side, two on the left - VGA-out, Ethernet port, mic and headphone jacks. With icons down either side of the keyboard that are a nice touch, meaning you don't need to pick the machine up to locate the USB port.

Bring all these elements together and what you have is our favourite new netbook. Samsung may not have delivered anything new in terms of design or specification but what it's done is take the best of what is out there, distil it through some netbook wonder-tank and boil it down to the very essence of what a netbook should be. Partnering with O2 mean together, they should have a good 12 months expanding the laptop dongle market.

Hi. I am using a Vodafone usb stick to connect to the internet and so far so good.
There are things about the Vodafone mobile broadband I love, and things I find very frustrating.
im with vodafone mobile broardband and can honestly say its excellant value for money im on a two year contract customer services was spot on and any probs delt with promptly but can any one tell me if my firewall affects me connecting to the internet because ive just installed new anti virus and it has been so slow or non existant network ive disabled my firewall and bingo works great again fingers and legs crossed i hope. (Note from Admin - some anti virus programs have a bad habit of slowing down your computer, and the anti virus could well be to blame. If uninstalling the anti virus program makes your computer fast again, then switch to a different anti virus solution, NOD32.com from ESET software does a good job.)
Super Fast dongle from Vodafone - had it 1 week and speeds seem to be variable. Cannot deny it does what it says on the tin. 4 out of 5 for me.
I have bought the Vodafone prepay dongle. I am on the move a lot and this option works for me. Service and Speed fair, price for usage good, dongle cost me slightly more than o2, does anyone know if this means my dongle is better quality ?
